COVID-19: transmission and prevention

COVID-19 has swept the whole world and caused many unfortunate losses. As many of you knew already from the news, the pathogen behind is called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Although it is primarily known for causing respiratory symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, and difficulty to breathe, the emerging evidences suggest that SARS-CoV-2 does not only target lungs, but also ileum, heart, liver, bladder and even brain according to the Scientist.

The prevention of COVID-19 infection is of everyone interest now. We will explain the transmission routes and some advice for prevention.

European Center for Disease Prevention and Control listed the primary transmission route of COVID-19 is human-to-human contact through respiratory droplets generated by breathing, sneezing and coughing and direct contact with infected subject or contaminated surfaces. Transmission through aerosols has also been implicated. Other studies have found positive results in stool samples, and fecal-oral transmission of SARS-Cov-2 has also been reported in the Center for Evidence-Based Medicine. COVID-19 can be spread by asymptomatic hosts as well.

The prevention of COVID-19 for general public as suggested by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the USA, was to wash and sanitize hands often, especially before touching your face, eating or preparing for food. Avoid close contact and keep 6 feet (1.8m) distance as possible. Cover mouths and noses with mask when around others, especially when social distancing is impossible. Cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or elbow. Clean and disinfect surfaces that are frequently touched every day.   

For health professionals at work, CDC has also suggested to use optimize personal protective equipments (PPE) supply, which includes eye protection, gowns, facemasks, elastomeric respirators, ventilation to clean aerosols.
