Silver ions react very intensely with a number of chemical groups containing sulphur (sulphide or titre groups). Accordingly two things occur: cell structures are destroyed and enzymes are inactivated. However, the latter take part in countless mechanisms inside cells, and without them life would not be possible. If their function is prevented, or if the enzyme is destroyed, the vital processes of those pathogenic germs are also prevented, and as a result they die. But silver also acts on the nucleic acids of the bacteria, important components of their genetic information (DNA and RNA). Evidently the silver bond stops germinal plasma from spreading as the RNA or DNA stabilizes. Accordingly, this stops the duplication of the genetic information necessary for cell multiplication. Such an interruption therefore needs to be co-responsible, if not fully responsible for the antibacterial effect.
